Phoenix Seelochan, a student in U of T Mississauga's honours bachelor of arts program who is pursuing a combined specialist in political science and economics, has been named a 2024 Student of the Year by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning (CEWIL) Canada.
The award recognizes college and university students for their outstanding work during co-op and work-integrated learning placements.
As an intern with the NATO Association of Canada (NAOC) since September 2024, Seelochan contributed to policy-relevant articles on the intersection of climate change and global security. As team lead for NAOC’s Environment, Climate Change and Security Program, she managed a diverse team of 25 including editors and junior research fellows.
Seelochan also represented NAOC and U of T at the Global Peace Summit in Thailand in January, engaging with conflict survivors and international delegates on the role of policy in achieving peace.
“Ultimately, I am driven by the desire to make the world a better place, which is a goal I have held since I was a child,” says Seelochan, who is set to begin the master of public policy program at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy in fall 2025. "My experiences so far have confirmed my passion for creating positive change, and I look forward to continuing to learn, grow, and contribute to my community and the world at large.”
