Talks between the University of Toronto and CUPE 3902 Unit 3 are headed to conciliation on Friday.
The move follows 16 sessions of collective bargaining held since July.
Approximately 1,200 sessional instructors at U of T are represented by CUPE 3902 Unit 3. On Wednesday, a majority of employees who voted gave the union a strike mandate.
A key issue in the negotiations is the union’s proposal that would require the University to “convert” a minimum number of sessional lecturers to full-time teaching-stream and tenure-stream faculty positions in each academic year, without participating in a competitive hiring process.
In a statement released on Nov. 16, the University called the union’s proposal “fundamentally inconsistent with its open, collegial and competitive faculty recruitment process.”
