U of T one of world's top three universities: NTU Ranking
The University of Toronto placed third in the world in the National Taiwan University Ranking, behind only Harvard and Johns Hopkins universities.
U of T moved up one position from its fourth-place position last year in the annual ranking of universities based on scientific paper performance.
“Once again this year, this major international ranking places the University of Toronto among the very greatest research universities in the world,” said U of T president Meric Gertler. “In the quantity and quality of their scientific papers, U of T researchers are making an enormous global impact.”
NTU also ranked the world’s top 500 universities in six fields – agriculture, clinical medicine, engineering, life sciences, natural sciences and social sciences. U of T placed third in the clinical medicine category, seventh in life sciences and tenth in social sciences. U of T was the top Canadian university in all categories.
“Since 2007 the University has ranked between 14th and third in the world and consistently first in Canada,” said Marny Scully, U of T’s assistant vice-president of government, institutional and community relations. “These results demonstrate U of T’s consistent world-class research performance, particularly in science disciplines.”

National Taiwan University uses three criteria to measure scientific paper performance: research productivity, research impact and research excellence. “The emphasis on current research performance makes the indicators used in this ranking system more objective than traditional indicators such as a university’s reputation reflected by peer reviews, or the number of Nobel laureates affiliated with that university, which tend to favor universities with longer histories or universities in developed countries,” according to the NTU ranking website.
U of T has done well in most international rankings this year, placing 19th in the Times Higher Education magazine rankings, 25th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and 16th in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities ranking.
