University of Toronto is Canada's top university: U.S. News & World Report Rankings
The University of Toronto took 14th spot – and ranked best in Canada – in the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Ranking, released October 28.
The survey examined 500 global institutions and focused on academic research and overall reputation.
“The University of Toronto continues to be recognized as a global leader for its academic research excellence,” said Professor Meric Gertler, president of the university. “I am delighted to see our outstanding faculty recognized for their world-class research.”
The U.S. News & World Report rankings’ methodology favours global reputation and research volume. Global research reputation and regional reputation together account for 25 per cent of an institution’s score, with number of publications making up an additional 12.5 per cent.
Alongside U of T, three other Canadian universities made this year’s top 100: University of British Columbia (30th), McGill University (44th) and Université de Montréal (96th).
“We are consistently receiving recognition for being the country’s leading research powerhouse,” says Gertler. “The work our faculty is producing has a tangible impact around the world.”
This is the fifth consecutive global rankings survey in 2014 to name the University of Toronto first in Canada and among the world’s best. On October 9 the National Taiwan University rankings placed U of T fourth – one of only two non-American universities, alongside Oxford, to make the top 10. Earlier this fall the University ranked 20th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, 20th in the QS World Rankings and, in August, was the highest-ranked Canadian university in the Shanghai Jiao Tong’s Academic Ranking of World Universities.
