Angela Esterhammer recognized with 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship

Angela Esterhammer, a professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science's department of English and former principal of Victoria College, has been awarded a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship.

Presented annually by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation since 1925, the Guggenheim Fellowships support mid-career professionals who have shown exceptional capacity as scholars or artists and are producing transformative work.

The fellowship will enable Esterhammer to pursue her research on the Scottish-born writer and entrepreneur John Galt (1779–1839) in the context of the changing nature of authorship, print culture and transatlantic and international affiliations of British literature in the early- to mid-19th century.

“I’m thrilled and extremely grateful for the Guggenheim Foundation’s outstanding support of scholarship and creativity, especially in arts and humanities fields,” said Esterhammer.

“Professor Esterhammer is a star in 19th-century literary studies – as an important critic and a powerhouse in her editorial work," said Robert McGill, chair of the department of English. "She's also a brilliant teacher who inspires our students and facilitates their development as researchers in extraordinary ways."

“We often hear about the wonderful achievements of Victoria students – this happens within an environment where learners are inspired by outstanding faculty,” said Rhonda McEwen, president of Victoria University. "Angela Esterhammer exemplifies leaders who know, go and show the way."
