Brigitte Shim recognized with Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Gold Medal
Professor Brigitte Shim of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design has been awarded the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Gold Medal for her significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture.
Shim shares the distinction – recognized as Canada’s top honour in the field of architecture – with Howard Sutcliffe, her fellow founding partner at Shim-Sutcliffe Architects.
“An instrumental member of the Daniels Faculty for decades, Brigitte has raised the quality of our programs and inspired countless students,” said Robert Wright¸ associate professor and interim dean at Daniels. “The RAIC Gold Medal is a fitting honour and on behalf of the entire school community, I congratulate Brigitte and Howard on this extraordinary achievement.”
Shim and Sutcliffe founded Shim-Sutcliffe Architects in 1994. The firm’s significant projects include the Integral House ravine residence; the Robertson Davies Library and St. Catherine’s Chapel in Massey College at the University of Toronto; and the Corkin Gallery in Toronto’s Distillery District.
Shim began teaching at the University of Toronto in 1988. At the Daniels Faculty, she leads core design studios, advanced design studios and elective courses.
Shim and Sutcliffe previously received 15 Governor General’s Medals for Architecture and an American Institute of Architects National Honour Award, and were both awarded the Order of Canada in 2013.
