Shizuhiko Nishisato, a professor emeritus in the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), has been recognized with the Psychometric Society's Career Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Nishisato joined OISE in 1967 as one of its first faculty members and retired in 2000. Over the course of more than three decades at the institute, he made fundamental contributions to the field of psychometrics, which deals with objective measurement of constructs that cannot be directly observed – such as intelligence, introversion and educational achievement.
“Psychometrics is devoted to the quantitative analysis of psychological phenomena,” said Nishisato, who has published 19 books and more than 200 papers. “It’s very much like econometrics for economics and biometrics for biology.”
Nishisato will receive a commemorative plaque, a monetary prize and free lifetime membership to the Psychometric Society. He is also invited to present a keynote lecture at the society's next international meeting this summer.
