Mark Bennett awarded first TDC Ezhishin Scholarship
Mark Bennett, a graphic designer in the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s office of communications, has received the inaugural Type Directors Club (TDC) Ezhishin Scholarship.
Named after the Ojibwe word for “s/he leaves a mark,” the annual $5,000 scholarship was established by the TDC and Google and recognizes “First Nation and Native American people in Canada and the U.S. who exemplify a creative practice that explores typography, type design or relevant linguistic work.”
The designer/art director for Temerty Medicine’s award-winning alumni magazine, UofTMed, Bennett is also a part-time architectural studies student at U of T's John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design. He has explored typography for several years, and his work was featured most recently in the Inuit Art Quarterly. He also contributed to the new typeface and visual identity of the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq.
Bennett was presented with the scholarship at the TDC ASCENDERS event in New York City on September 7.
