Order of Canada recognizes U of T faculty, alumni, community members

Faculty members, alumni and other members of the University of Toronto community were among those named to the Order of Canada on Nov. 27.

Governor General Julie Payette released a list of 114 Canadians named as members, officers or companions to the Order, one of Canada’s highest civilian honours.

Among those recognized as Officers of the Order were: University Professor Eugenia Kumacheva of the department of chemistry in the Faculty of Arts & Science, Associate Professor Philip Berger of the department of family and community medicine in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine; alumnus Bill Graham, the chancellor of Trinity College and former federal minister of foreign affairs and minister of national defence, and alumna Sara Seager, one of the world’s leading astrophysicists.

Among those recognized as members was Cristina Amon, Alumni Distinguished Professor in Bioengineering and Dean Emerita of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering.

“Years ago, I made the choice to pursue my life’s work in Canada, a country that values and celebrates the diversity of cultures, backgrounds, abilities and perspectives of each one of its people,” Amon said. “It is deeply meaningful for me to receive this award in recognition of my own contributions to advancing that diversity and inclusion, and to creating new opportunities for generations yet to come.”
